Plantcotex City Grate is a complete range of tree surround grilles manufactured from recycled and recyclable HDPE. Lightweight, quick to install, easy to cut and highly cost-effective, Plantcotex City Grate grilles integrate perfectly into tree planting and landscaping projects.
Description:
Significantly more cost-effective than traditional metal tree grilles, Plantcotex City Grate tree surrounds are manufactured from recycled and recyclable HDPE, providing an efficient solution for creating a harmonious coexistence between urban trees and public spaces. Their construction is resistant to de-icing salts, rain and other environmental conditions, eliminating the need for painting or ongoing surface maintenance.
Moulded with a UV-stabilised carbon black treatment, City Grate grilles resist fading and maintain their mechanical strength over time. This treatment also provides excellent resistance to extreme climatic conditions and cigarette burns (melting point: 103–140°C; flash point: approximately 371°C).
In urban environments, tree root systems face three major challenges: construction works, repeated pedestrian traffic and soil sealing. Continuous foot traffic compacts the soil, restricting the circulation of water and nutrients essential for healthy root development. Plantcotex City Grate tree surrounds help mitigate these issues by achieving two key objectives: protecting the soil from excessive compaction and maintaining soil permeability, which is essential for long-term tree health.
To ensure optimal performance, the grille opening should be appropriately sized to fit the base of each tree trunk. If required, Plantcotex City Grate panels can be easily cut using a reciprocating saw, allowing the opening to be enlarged quickly as the tree grows. This adjustment can also be carried out after installation.
Each grille section weighs less than 15 kg, allowing installation by a single person.
Plantcotex City Grate tree grilles must be installed on a supporting perimeter frame. This support structure can be formed using concrete, HDPE sleepers or the dedicated steel frame designed for the system. A 5 mm expansion gap should be maintained around the perimeter of the grille.
Once the frame is correctly positioned, a suitable soil-stone mix or equivalent material should be used to fill the space between the top of the tree pit and the underside of the grille, creating a compacted load-bearing base. The two grille halves are then connected together on trestles before being positioned onto the support frame.
Each Plantcotex City Grate tree grille is supplied with tamper-resistant assembly bolts for secure installation.
