Invisible once installed, root barriers are devices placed in the ground to limit or guide the growth of tree and shrub roots. Their purpose is to protect infrastructure and safeguard surrounding plantings.
As they develop, the roots of trees, shrubs and plants can damage pavements, roads, walls, building foundations or underground utilities. A root barrier creates a physical barrier that prevents roots from entering sensitive areas, redirecting and channeling their growth instead.
When strategically installed, root barriers help preserve underground networks such as water, electricity, gas and telecommunications systems.
Installing a root barrier can also help contain invasive plants such as bamboo or Japanese knotweed, preventing them from spreading and overtaking nearby vegetation.
